MIG Completes Rapid Pendant Installation at New Maternity & Neonatal Department for Nottingham University Hospital

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) tends to more than 2.5 million residents in Nottinghamshire and beyond.
As part of its ongoing commitment to modernising healthcare facilities, the Trust undertook a major refurbishment of the Neonatal Unit at the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) to increase capacity and enhance patient care across the East Midlands.
MIG Medical was proud to be involved in this vital project, delivering and installing 33 pendants across the unit over a three-week period.
This upgrade was a key element in transforming an outdated space into a modern facility better equipped to meet the needs of premature and critically ill newborns.

The installation process presented several logistical challenges, requiring careful coordination and planning to ensure smooth execution within the live hospital environment.
One major challenge was transporting the pendants and accessories from the delivery point to their installation locations.
Given the busy nature of the hospital, we worked closely with the main contractor and the NHS Trust to identify the quietest times for transport.
A pre-planned route was established, with extra workforce stationed along corridors to clear pathways and maintain the safety and privacy of both patients and staff.

Another significant challenge was the low ceiling voids. To overcome this, we conducted a pre-site visit and survey, collaborating closely with the Trust and ceiling contractors to devise a suitable solution that met all requirements without compromising safety or functionality.
For this project, our team was solely focused on the pendant installation, with medical gas systems installed by a separate contractor. We carried out the installation with minimal disruption to hospital operations by sensitively arranging for the best times to bring our tools and lifting equipment on-site, ensuring safety at all times.

We installed a combination of Dräger Ambia double-arm and single-arm pendants, which are designed to enhance workflow efficiency and free up more vital floorspace.
Our involvement came towards the final stages of this exciting project, which between everyones contribution has resulted in the overall footprint of the site increasing from 500m² to 2000m².
With the completion of this project, the Queen’s Medical Centre Neonatal Unit is now equipped to provide the very best care to newborns and their families across the region.
This modernised facility offers increased bed capacity, improving accessibility for families who previously had to travel further to access specialised healthcare.

The expanded unit is expected to help reduce waiting times and ease the burden on neighbouring neonatal services, ensuring critically ill babies receive urgent, high-quality treatment.
This investment in neonatal care highlights the commitment of NUH to delivering world-class healthcare services.

By working closely with the NHS Trust and other contractors, MIG Medical has played a vital role in ensuring the success of this crucial development.
The improved facility will not only enhance patient outcomes but also create a better working environment for medical staff, allowing them to provide the best possible care to some of the most vulnerable patients in the East Midlands.
